Cluster Headaches

These are the headaches that occur repeatedly for weeks or months in clusters at the same time of the day.

It usually begins around the eye as mild pain but soon spreads to the whole face.

Gradually it becomes quite unbearable and the patient literally rolls on the floor in pain.

It is usually accompanied by symptoms like droopy eyelid on the side of pain along with tearing. The nose may also become stuffy with thin nasal secretions.

Each attack lasts for about 1/2 hour to an hour. The clusters may not appear for months or years. Or they may last a long time. They may also occur more in certain seasons.

They usually start in young age. Victims are more often males. It usually doesn't pass on in families. Its more common among smokers and heavy drinkers.

Clusters are usually difficult to treat with medications.

Though some novel techniques such as providing oxygen through a mask for few minutes have shown to relieve cluster headaches. Sometimes facial nerve procedures also help in long standing clusters.
